The next time you get a friend request from an unknown person, check and then double check again.  When it comes to fake profiles, almost 97% of fake Facebook profiles identify themselves as women reveals an infographic released by leading internet security firm Barracuda Labs.

Fake Facebook Profiles a Reality

While we all are aware that fake profiles exist, this analysis proves beyond doubt the quantum and scale of such profiles which is definitely much higher than what we would have imagined.  For naysayers it might seem that the probability of people falling for fake requests is quite low but that is far from reality as we have been able to spot plenty of fake Facebook profiles that have a huge number of friends and followers.

Most people who create fake Facebook profiles can post all that they want in terms of content that they post on the fake profile accept for photos of their own

Fake profiles are either created with a malicious intent and today unfortunately by many internet marketeers and companies as part of their black hat strategies or either used a front-profile to engage with potential and existing customers.

The later in our opinion wouldn’t pose as great a threat compared to the ones posed by owners with malicious intent, especially teenagers who are more vulnerable.

The infographic definitely offers some great cues on what you need to look at before accepting a friend request but here’s one simple technique you could use to identify fake Facebook profiles in just under 30 seconds.

Simple Technique to Spot Fake Facebook Profiles

As soon as you get a request from an unknown person, taking cues from the infographic the person most likely would be a hot looking babe, single, and interested in men and women, simply head over to the photos tab to unravel the mystery.  Most people who create fake Facebook profiles can post all that they want in terms of content that they post on the fake profile accept for photos of their own.  While a genuine user in all likelihood puts up a lot of photos, for fake Facebook profiles it is very difficult for the owner to procure multiple images of the same person.  You would see a lot of albums and photos on the photos tab but clearly photos relevant to the fake profile (photos of self, friends, family, etc.) would be missing which is a clear indicator that the profile is fake.

On additional check you could run is to see the kind of posts and comments being posted on the wall and you would know within seconds that the profile is fake.

Another important thing you need to keep in mind is not all profiles would give you access to look through photos without accepting the friend request.  In this case the best way forward is to simply ignore the request.  Of course if you are dying of curiosity, go ahead and accept the request, check the profile and once you finish your investigation, delete the person from your profile.

One last thing we need to mention before we end this article is creators of fake profiles follow the trail of friends/connections when they send out fake requests.  When you receive a request you might already see that the fake profile is already friends with a few other people you know which might make you think it is safe but that might not be the case as your friend in question might have already fallen for the lure.

That’s all and we would appreciate if readers could take time to share better ways to identify fake profiles.

Here is a glimpse of the infographic and it’s findings.

I actually encountered one.. she was too smart (she thought like that 🙂 ) she made 5 of my friends as a friend in her list and started chatting with us. As we were asking her real pic to be uploaded she still used picasaweb to grab some pictures to validate. as we figured out that she is fake, we reported to facebook. so far nothing done from facebook end. She removed 5 of us and joined another set of 5 people in her list now.. 🙂 she continuing her ride to cheat others.. i confirmed its she after talking to her via phone… and she is from chennai. 😉

You have mentioned some real fact, Before I was working as SMO executive is one company and I worked by using orkut. The same thing happen is orkut. People used girl’s profile for promote their service and friend list is full of guys. Now I can easily distinguish which is fake and which is real profile on any social network site.

I used to be excited every time that I received a friend request from a hot girl, but now I pretty just assume that it is spam, because it almost always is.

I never worry about guy friend requests though, I’ve never once encounter a male spam profile!

One way you can tell if its a fake profile is if your in a relationship & your not really connected with your partner, boyfriend or girlfriend, or if your just ah cheating looking person your probably ganna encounter that but if your not shady or you don’t give the signs of a cheater or that your just dragging your feet with your Guy/girl and suddnely became better than the person and now is uninterested you won’t have to wonder if their making ah fake page. Best advice I could give is date with serious intentions and leave the BS at your moms house. Wait not even your moms house Cush she prolly don’t want that mess either ant nobody got time for that…
So my question to anybody with this question (how to tell if its ah fake fb page )

J/s lol
